Morphosyntax in Down’s Syndrome: Is the Extended Optional Infinitive Hypothesis an Option?

چکیده
This paper examines the question of whether language impairment in Down’s syndrome (DS) can be characterized in terms of the same linguistic markers that were identified for Specific Language Impairment (SLI). The specific proposal we will assess is whether English-speaking adolescents with DS are more impaired in tense-related grammatical morphemes than in non-tense-related morphemes, a dissociation that has been argued to explain the linguistic profile of individuals with SLI. We tested 8 adolescents with DS and various groups of unimpaired children matched for mental age to the DS participants in four elicitation tasks examining the past tense, noun plurals, and comparative adjectives. We found that non-tense related morphemes are affected in a similar way to tense-related morphemes in DS indicating that the linguistic impairment in DS is broader than in SLI and not restricted to the finiteness cluster.

Three Problems in the Theory of the Optional Infinitive Stage: Stage/ Individual Predicates, Eventive Verbs and Finite Null-Subjects
Much of the early morphology and syntax of clause structure (until roughly age 3;0) can be described via the Optional Infinitive (OI) model (Wexler 1990, 1992, 1994), and recent versions of the theory incorporating the Unique Checking Constraint (UCC) (Wexler 1998) successfully explain variation in whether a language goes through the OI stage. The purpose of this paper is to apply the theory to...
متن کاملThe Acquisition of Tense in English: Distinguishing child second language from first language and specific language impairment.
This study reports on a comparison of the use and knowledge of tense-marking morphemes in English by first language (L1), second language (L2) and specifically language-impaired (SLI) children. The objective of our research was to ascertain whether the L2 children's tense acquisition patterns were similar or dissimilar to those of the L1 and SLI groups, and whether they would fit an (Extended) ...
متن کاملThe interface between neighborhood density and optional infinitives: normal development and Specific Language Impairment.
The effect of neighborhood density on optional infinitives was evaluated for typically developing (TD) children and children with Specific Language Impairment (SLI). Forty children, twenty in each group, completed two production tasks that assessed third person singular production. Half of the sentences in each task presented a dense verb, and half presented a sparse verb. Children's third pers...

متن کاملSimulating the Cross-Linguistic Development of Optional Infinitive Errors in MOSAIC
The Optional Infinitive (OI) phenomenon in children’s speech has attracted a great deal of attention due to its occurrence in a variety of languages (including English, Dutch and German), and its apparent absence in other languages (such as Spanish and Italian). Wexler (1998) explains this pattern of results in terms of a Unique Checking Constraint that interacts with cross-linguistic differenc...
